Founder
Our church was founded in the March 1960 by our late founder, Pastor Katie Shaw. We were affiliated with the Original Glorious Churches of God in Christ organization which was based out of Cleveland, Ohio. Under her leadership, the church grew tremendously. Young people as well as old were being taught to follow Christ. In late 1969, we acquired a store front location on the corner of 16th Avenue and Jacob Street in the city of Newark, NJ.
In the year of 1970, Pastor Katie Shaw was lead of the Lord to become an affiliate of the Independent Church of God in Christ Jesus, Inc. organization under the leadership of the late Bishop Charlie Jones. She renamed the church, "Shiloh Temple Antioch Independent C.O.G.I.C. Jesus, Inc". Just before her death in August of 1975, she appointed the assistant pastor of the church, Minister Virginia A. Shaw to take charge of the pastorate.
With the help and support of the church members, Pastor Virginia A. Shaw has been leader with a mind of Christ having a heart for the people. The church always had an adult choir, up to this point. With a special love and concern for the children, she formed a children's choir and called them the "Shilohettes". They became very popular in the local area and was requested to sing out often at various churches.
As the church continued to grow, Pastor Virginia A. Shaw and the church members recognized a need to relocate to a larger place of worship. In 1977, the church found and purchased a building at 547 South 19th Street in Newark, NJ. Even though the church acquired this facility, parking for the patrons was a challenge. Within a three year period, the Lord gave the church favor and we purchased 3 lots of land that were located adjacent to the church. We now utilize them for parking and church activities.
Shiloh Temple, also referred to by one of our members as "the little church with a big heart", continues to strive for the cause of Christ after over 59 years of being in existence. This is truly a blessing. What God has ordained, let no man put asunder.
Shiloh Temple C.O.G.I.C. Jesus Inc. is a Christ-centered community embracing Christian Liturgy and Pentecostal fervor. We hold in tension a call to spirit-filled living and social renewal. Our four fold mission is to Evangelize, Educate, Emancipate and Empower in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ through Loving, Lifting and Liberating humanity.
We are a Christian church, Apostolic by denomination, Pentecostal by experience, Holiness by choice.
